OUR NIGHT

Low lights, scented candles, roses and white bed sheets with a tang of citrus and lavender filled the room. Mr. Oriah wanted this night to be like the ones he saw in movies. He wanted his wife, Elizabeth to know she was loved and cherished beyond all measures.

After an hour wait in the room, Elizabeth walked into the room with the double door to his suite opening for her like a queen. Mr. Oriah who sat on a dining table directly opposite the door stood up to usher her in.

“How are you this evening, My love?” He asked, pecking her cheeks, her warm skin caressing his lips.

“Never felt much younger.” She said, straining her voice to speak.
“Happy birthday!” He wished her and she smiled back at him.

The thing is, Elizabeth had cancer and she had begun to look very old but even though her skin had wrinkled her heart still bloomed.

Mr. Oriah ushered her to her seat. Elizabeth’s turquoise silk gown swam in between her thighs as she sat, the gap they had was enough to fill a dozen kittens and when Mr. Oriah saw this his heart sank. “What would the lady like for her appetizers?” He asked her distracting himself.

“Whatever is finest on the menu.” she said with a soft smile and Mr. Oriah nodded. He brought back a plate of wheat broth in fine white china.

“You know just what I like.” She said to him.
“I am your husband after all.” The wheat broth wasn’t a choice for either of them; it was actually the only thing she ate.

The evening followed with the windows opened letting the cool breeze glide in, soft rhythm of the room speaker playing jazz and sweet afro-orchestra and a few stolen kisses. They both danced and danced till Elizabeth gasped for breath and Mr. Oriah insisted she rested.

Morning came, Mr. Oriah was awake and  had his entire day planned. He wished it would go as such. After he was done, getting ready, he slipped on his jacket and walked out. With a short drive he arrived at the cemetery and knelt in front of a stone plaque that read:

IN LOVING MEMORY, ELIZABETH EZECHI ORIAH, A MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, SISTER AND AUNT. JULY 10 1956- SEPTEMBER 8 2017.

“Hey baby!” Mr. Oriah said dropping a flower bouquet beside it. “Happy Birthday!” He cleaned a tear from  his eye. “You know I dreamt about you last night. I dreamt about your birthday last year. How we spent our last time together.” He said sitting on the floor properly.
